Meeting Minutes

Monday, October 16, 2000

  1. Meeting called to order at 7:00p.m.
  2. In attendance: Jake Hamlin, Dave Johnson, Joe Ling, and Glen Terry.

  3. Approval of 10-16 MBA Agenda.
  4. Motion: Glen Terry moved that the 10-16 MBA Agenda be approved. Jake Hamlin seconded the motion. The motion was passed.

  5. Approval of Minutes from the September 18, 2000 Meeting.
  6. Copies of the 9-18 minutes were distributed.

    Motion: Glen Terry moved that the 9-18 minutes be approved. Jake Hamlin seconded the motion. The motion was passed.

  7. Treasurer’s Report.
  8. Glen Terry reported a balance of $1,537.81. The balance is based on $891.28 in the general fund, $344 from the April 2000 safety seminar, $275 from the sale of pins, and $37 cash.

  9. Committee Reports
  1. Safety Seminar (Dave Johnson)
  2. Dave and Glen identified other potential speakers for the safety seminar while at Fiesta. The next meeting of the safety seminar committee (October 26) will focus on confirming presenters and topics.

    The safety seminar will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2001. Presenters have committed on the topics of practical weather application, FARs, first aid, and tresspass-traffic obstruction. Additional presenters are needed.

    The site for the 2001 seminar is Aamodt’s Apple Orchard. A Friday evening get together is scheduled and a Saturday afternoon barbeque will be provided.

  3. Balloon Education
  4. One or more persons are needed to be the liaison(s) for the Junior Balloonist program.

  5. Ground School

  7. Social Events
  8. The December 18 meeting of the MBA will not be held at the Washburn Public Library. Rather, a gathering at a site to be determined is planned.

  9. State Fair Booth

A brief discussion ensued about opportunities to increase the visibility at the State Fair, including the possible demonstration of an inflation.

  1. Old Business

A. Board members are drafting a letter to Ball Variometers stating the concern about the availability and cost of instrument packages.

  1. Pins: Glen stated that there are hundreds of pins available. The official white MBA pins sell for $2.00 and yellow pins may be purchased for $1.00 each.

C. James F. Dubay Memorial Scholarship Application.

A gentleman at the State Fair passed on a scholarship application that is aimed to benefit working adults. If you know of working adults interested in various aspects of aviation please contact Jake Hamlin at pboeandjhamlin@qwest.net for a copy of the scholarship application.

  1. Fiesta

After setting a record of 329 balloons launching in one hour for the mass ascension unfavorable conditions settled in Saturday through Tuesday. Although there were limited flight opportunities participants still enjoyed many activities during those days.

The Gordon Bennet race was a tremendous success. David Lemmon launch from Albequerque and landed 1,979 miles away in Portland, Maine.

Wynne Gustafson and Betty Henneberg had the honor of launching first and carrying the flag during the first flight of Fiesta.

Roscoe’s barbeque hosted a fine feast and get together on Saturday evening despite driving rain over the area.

VIII. Meeting Adjourned

Motion: Glen Terry made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Jake Hamlin seconded the motion. The motion was passed.

The next monthly meeting of the MBA will be Monday, November 20, 2000.
