Safety Seminar Committee

  1. Meeting called to order at 7:00p.m. (Dave Johnson)
  2. In attendance: George Ibach, Dave Johnson, Bill Marhoun, Glen Terry, Matt Wiederkehr, and Jake Hamlin.

  3. Location.
  4. Dave Johnson contacted Aamodt’s to determine if the site was available for the MBA to host a seminar next spring. The site is available for a $500 rental fee. Based on the rental fee in comparison to other site costs which average $1,000 in catering requirements Dave will contact Aamodt’s to confirm the site.

  5. Date.
  6. The seminar will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2000. A wine/cheese gathering will occur on Friday evening. Glen Terry suggested having a list of sponsors available for viewing on Friday evening.

  7. Letter to Sioux Falls Balloon Club.
  8. Dave sent a letter to Duane Waack, incoming president of the Sioux Falls Balloon Club, notifying that the MBA will be hosting a safety seminar within the next 12 months. The letter stated that the MBA was very greatful for the presence of Sioux Falls Balloon Club members at last spring’s safety seminar.

  9. Core seminar.
  10. Next spring’s seminar will be a core seminar in which a variety of topics are covered to meet the BFA requirements for a core seminar.

  11. Presenters/Topics.
  12. - Bill Griffin is confirmed to speak on the practical application of meteorology toward a balloon flight.

    - Marlon Perhaus is confirmed to speak about FARs.

    - George Ibach will contact Bill Zangs to speak about FARs/airspace regulations.

    - Matt Wiederkehr will contact Bill Cunningham to potentially speak about competition ballooning and powerline contact.

    - Bill Marhoun will contact a local first responder to speak about first aid.

    - Glen Terry will contact a State Trooper supervisor and Jake Hamlin will contact the Minnesota Sheriffs Association to potentially discuss trespassing laws.

    All speakers will be provided with a hotel room and gas money as necessary.

  13. Next Meeting.

The next meeting of MBA safety seminar committee will occur on Thursday, September 7 at 7:00pm at the Bungalow.
